Presidential Committee On National Defence Policy Commences Public Presentation

                 The Presidential Committee on National Defence Policy has scheduled public presentation fora to hold simultaneously in three zones across the country from 21–22 January 2015.


The zones are Kaduna, Enugu and Lagos.
The Chairman of Presidential Committee on the Review of the National Defence Policy, Air Vice Marshal Mohammed Ndaatu Umar (rtd) disclosed this while briefing the media on the activities of the Committee at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Kado, Abuja.

Air Vice Marshal Umar said that the public presentation was aimed at assisting the Committee to draw up a robust draft policy for the Government to implement.

He pointed out that papers on different topics will be presented by experts and members of the public.

The topics to be discussed at each centre, among others, are as follows:

    Kaduna Centre: (i) Understanding Nigeria’s National Interest, (ii) Management of National Security Resources, (iii) Education and Training to Meet Contemporary Defence Challenges and (iv) Politics, Governance and National Defence.
    Enugu Centre: (i) Defence Climate Change and Disaster Management, (ii) Total Defence: Concept and Practice, (iii) Research and Development for Self-Reliance in Defence Needs: Public, Private, Partnership (PPP) and (iv) Enhancing Acquisition Process for Effective National Defence.
    Lagos Centre: (i) Citizens Participation in National Defence, (ii) Evolving Civil-Military Relations: Concept and Practice, (iii) Robust Reserve Force for the Armed Forces: Options for National Defence,  (iv) Morale, Welfare and National Defence.

The National Defence Policy provides general guidelines for the employment of the Armed Forces and deployment of National recourses to secure Nigerian citizens, maintain the country’s territorial integrity, protect her from external aggression and facilitate the achievement of her national interest.

The current National Defence Policy was promulgated in 2006 and since then, the Nation has undergone a lot of transformation in terms of development as well as security challenges.

The 35-man Committee, which was inaugurated on 20 November 2014 was made up of competent resource persons and experts in defence matters, drawn from both military and civilians.

The Committee has till March 2015 to submit its report.
