So Much Fuss About Will Smith’s Nigerian Accent

There has been so much fuss about Will Smith’s Nigerian accent since the release of the trailer to his recent film where he plays a Nigerian doctor.
In the film ‘Concussion’ due for release in December (2015) the 46 year-old American portays the character of the Nigerian-born forensic pathologist and neuropathologist, Dr. Bennet Omalu, who discovers Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) in the brains of two NFL players which later leads them both to suicide. The film is based on a 2009 GQ article by Jeanne Marie Laskas titled “Game Brain”.
The trailer to the film has been met with controvery over Smith’s accent which has been noted by some of the Nigerian public as inacurate and offensive.
Nigerian satirist Elnathan tweeted, “Hollywood created an accent for ‘Africans’ which they use whether the person is Liberian, Nigerian or Rwandan. Will Smith learnt it well.”
Here are some Instagram comments that criticizes Smith’s accent.
