Drinking three glasses of champagne every week can help to prevent the onset of dementia and Alzheimer’s, scientists have found. A compound found in pinot noir and pinot meunier both used to make champagne – can boost spatial memory and ward off brain diseases.
Academics at Reading University carried out the experiment involving rats and now want to move on to trials involving pensioners.
‘The results were dramatic,’ Professor Jeremy Spencer told the Mail on Sunday.
‘This research is exciting because it illustrates for the first time that moderate consumption of champagne has the potential to influence cognitive functioning such as memory.’
A spokesman for the Alzheimer’s Society told the Standard that though the results were ‘interesting’, ‘a lot more’ research needed to be done.
