Stop Using Caretakers To Run Local Government Areas, NBA Tells Govs

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has advised state governors across the federation to put a stop to the illegal practice of appointing caretakers to run the affairs of Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Mr. Kazeem Gbadamosi, the Chairman of Ibadan branch of the NBA, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The NBA chairman said that there is no provision in the 1999 Constitution, as amended, for the appointment of a caretaker as chairman of local government.

“This unconstitutional act has become a tradition in the states; can the president appoint caretaker governors.

“We should collectively fight the illegality of appointing caretaker committee for local government”, he said.

Gbadamosi also called on governors to conduct local government elections as at when due in line with the statute.

He said the people at the grass root were not enjoying the dividend of democracy because of the way the governors were running the affairs of the local government areas.

The local government area is the third tier of government but in most states across the country, it is administered as an appendage of the state government. (NAN)
