Cross River State governor, Mr. Liyel Imoke, has said that after 10 years of remarkable outings, the Carnival Calabar remains the greatest show ever in Africa.
He stated this weekend at the Millennium Park while declaring open the 2014 adult Carnival Calabar in Cross River State. He also said that the annual event has come to stay.
“This is 10 years of the Calabar Carnival, the greatest street party ever and the greatest show in Africa.” He said.
Speaking earlier, chairman of the state’s Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah, disclosed that the government has put in place deliberate measures to ensure the sustenance of Carnival Calabar.
“Apart from the carnival commission and its structures, there is a band association in view as well as the right political will,” Onah said.
The colorful event featured the regular five participating carnival bands which includes; Master blaster, Seagul, Passion 4, Bayside as well as Freedom band.
As part of the 32-Day Calabar Festival activities, several free shows and entertainment activities were held every evening and late into the night at a number of venues – the Millennium Park, The U J Esuene Stadium, the Cultural Centre Complex, Marina Beach and Resort, Tinapa and the Botanical Garden.
Celebrities spotted at the 2014 edition of the Calabar Carnival include – music making duo Psquare, Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw, TV host Ik Osakioduwa, DJ Sose, Jude Okoye, Faze, Terry G and others.
The 2014 edition of the Carnival Calabar, with theme “Celebration Time” which is the last for the Imoke led administration, also attracted Israeli ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Uriel Palti and his wife among other dignitaries.
