Group A
Malmo 0-5 Paris Saint-Germain
Sweden
striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic crowned a triumphant homecoming with a
second-half goal as Paris St Germain crushed Malmo 5-0 on Wednesday to
book a place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
With
the 34-year-old Ibrahimovic captaining PSG for the night, Adrien Rabiot
netted the first goal after three minutes by heading home Gregory van
der Wiel’s pinpoint cross.
Shakhtar Donetsk 3-4 Real Madrid
Cristiano
Ronaldo sparkled as Real Madrid, who had already sealed a place in the
last 16 of the Champions League, clinched top spot in Group A with a
remarkable 4-3 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.
Ronaldo
scored after 18 and 70 minutes while Luka Modric (50) and Dani Carvajal
(52) also struck to put the 10-times European champions in complete
command on a freezing night in western Ukraine.
Group B
CSKA Moskva 0-2 Wolfsburg
Andre
Schuerrle came off the bench to make one goal and score another as
Wolfsburg won 2-0 away to CSKA Moscow in Group B of the Champions League
on Wednesday.
The former Chelsea
player replaced Daniel Caligiuri just over an hour in at the Arena
Khimki with the game still goalless but he was responsible for getting
the breakthrough in the 67th minute.
Manchester United 0-0 PSV Eindhoven
Manchester
United endured a frustrating night when they were held to a goalless
draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford on Wednesday, squandering the
opportunity to seal their place in the last 16 of the Champions League.
United
would have qualified with a win, but their hopes are now in the balance
with the top three teams in Group B separated by only two points with
one match to play.
Group C
Astana 2-2 Benfica
Benfica
are on the verge of reaching the Champions League knockout stage after a
Raul Jimenez double salvaged a 2-2 draw at Astana in their Group C
clash on Wednesday.
The Portuguese
will qualify for the last 16 if Galatasaray do not win at Atletico
Madrid later on Wednesday, having recovered from goals by Patrick
Twumasi and Marin Anicic.
Atlético Madrid 2-0 Galatasaray
Atletico
Madrid eased through to the Champions League round of 16 with a game to
spare and eliminated Galatasaray when Antoine Griezmann’s double
secured a 2-0 win at home to the Turkish side in Group C on Wednesday.
Atletico,
the 2014 runners-up, needed only a draw to progress and their
comfortable victory at the Calderon stadium put them level on 10 points
at the top of the group with Benfica and ahead of the Portuguese club on
goal difference.
Group D
Juventus 1-0 Manchester City
Mario
Mandzukic shrugged off his poor recent form to score the goal that sent
last year’s runners-up Juventus into the Champions League round of 16
with a 1-0 win over Manchester City on Wednesday.
The
Croatia forward struck in the 18th minute, just after Fernandinho had
missed a golden opportunity for the visitors who had already made sure
of their place in the knockout stage.
Borussia Mönchengladbach 4-2 Sevilla
Already-eliminated
Borussia Moenchengladbach crushed Sevilla 4-2 in their Champions League
Group D match on Wednesday with two goals from Lars Stindl for their
first ever victory in the competition that killed off the Spaniards’
hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Stindl
tapped in after 29 minutes and scored again after second half goals
from Fabian Johnson and Raffael, to lift Gladbach to five points in the
group and on track for a third place finish that leads to the Europa
League, with their last group match against Manchester City next month.
