A university professor, who subjected one of his students to a two-year period of physical and psychological torture by making him eat human feces and drink urine, has been handed a 12-years’ prison sentence.
The three students, who aided him in this inhuman act, had lesser sentences as they were handed between three and six years jail terms.
The incident happened in South Korea.
The sentence was two years more than what prosecutors demanded, signifying how strongly the court viewed what it said were “unimaginable atrocities” committed by the 52-year-old professor, who was identified only by his surname, Jang.
According to the court, the crimes committed by Professor Jang amounted “to a sort of psychological murder”.
The professor, arrested in July after his victim – a design student now aged 29, attempted suicide to escape his ordeal, which began after Jang hired him to work for a non-profit organization.
The court heard how the professor, aided by the three other former students, who were joined in the suit as co-defendants, had subjected his former student to physical abuse using a baseball bat and other weapons.
In addition, the professor, aided by former students, forced a plastic bag over the victim’s face and filled it with pepper spray, after which he was fed human excrement.
In his testimony, the victim, whose name was not disclosed to protect his privacy, told police he had tolerated the abuse in anticipation that Jang would assist him in securing a full-time job as a college professor.
In its judgment Thursday, the court said “The accused trampled upon his victim’s human dignity”.
