More than 200 villagers have attended wedding ceremony for two monkeys organised by their owner in Bettiah district in Bihar, northern India.

The wedding was organised by the owner of the 13-year-old male monkey named Ramu and his bride, a female monkey called Ramdulari. Udesh Mahto organised a procession through his village whereupon the couple were even solemnised by a local Hindu priest.

The “bride” dressed in an orange frock and the “groom” wearing a yellow T-shirt were taken in a procession on top of a flower-bedecked SUV, accompanied by music and dancing. Many people from neighbouring villages joined in the festivities, gave wedding cards and took pictures.

Owner Mahto, daily wage worker who has three sons, told local media: “Ramu is like an eldest son to me. Initially the monkeys didn’t get along well. But later they began liking each other, so I decided to marry them off,” he said.

Monkeys are revered idols in Hindu mythology. Hanuman, the Hindu monkey God, is one of the most worshipped figures in Indian religion.
