TUC, CISLAC React To National Assembly Crisis

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have also reacted to the crisis rocking the nation’s National Assembly.

TUC, in a statement issued on Thursday, signed by its president, Bobol Bala Kaigama, and secretary general, Musa Lawal, expressed shock over the role played by the country’s security operatives, Daily Independent reports.

It said the security operatives who were supposed to maintain law and order rather took side. It also condemned the use of security agents to seal off the National Assembly, describing it as a show of shame.

“We are worried that, from reports reaching the congress, heavily armed security agents made up of the police and officers of the Department of State Service (DSS), on Thursday, prevented the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, from gaining entry into the National Assembly complex for a sitting of the members of the House to deliberate on the request by the Presidency for extension of emergency rule in the three states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno,” the statement read.

However, the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has explained why it invaded the National Assembly Complex on Thursday, 20 November, 2014.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, had earlier warned the Federal Government and security operatives to make sure nothing happens to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

Meanwhile, on October 29, 2014, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) also threatened to sue the National Assembly for transferring labour matters from the exclusive to the concurrent legislative list, owing to perceived dwindling revenues accruing to the country.
