ABUBAKAR SHEKAU
The leader of Boko Haram, a militant Islamist movement based in Nigeria that has made numerous threats against the United States, claimed responsibility for kidnapping nearly 300 schoolgirls in April 2014. Six months later, he promised to release the girls as part of a cease-fire agreement with the Nigerian government, but went back on his word. He said the girls had become Muslims and that Boko Haram had "married them off." Other kidnappings and terrorist acts followed. The United States designated Boko Haram a terrorist organization in 2013.
