Today, December 17, was a day of pomp and celebration in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun state where Senator Buruji Kashamu representing Ogun East Senatorial District threw a party for his supporters.
According to reporter in Ogun state, the event happened at the Omo Ilu Foundation Complex in the town.
Recall that the Court of Appeal sitting in Ibadan on Monday, December 8, dismissed the tribunal judgment that nullified the election of Kashamu, who is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and declared him the winner of the election.
Kashamu’s supporters were very excited about the senator’s court victory, and he showed his appreciation by handing some cash to them and thanking them for their support.
One of his supporters named Tunji said:“We’re very happy that our man has won again in court. We’re solidly behind him and we’re glad he is a senator because of all the things he has done for us in this town. He is a man of the people. As you can see here, everybody loves him for his kindness. He is a very good man.”
Kazeem is a motorcycle rider who turned up to celebrate with Kashamu. He said: “I love Kashamu very much because he’s done many great things for us motorcycle riders. He donates money to us. He helps us many times. If we have to vote for him ten times over, we’ll still continue to vote for him because he deserves it.”
Another Kashamu supporter named Kemi said: “They keep saying the man is corrupt. But have they proven anything? They should leave this man alone and go after those corrupt politicians who keep stealing from this country. Kashamu is not corrupt. He’s good to us, and that’s why we continue to support him.”
Senator Kashamu is often portrayed in the media as a corrupt man, but in his area in Ijebu North, he is a very popular philanthropist with a lot of grassroots support.
Kashamu had earlier suggested that his election was not nullified at the tribunal, explaining that the national and state assemblies election petitions tribunal only nullified the votes attributed to both candidates in 110 polling units out of 1,135 in the senatorial district.
