Teargas fired at the lawmakers inside the House of Assembly
Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday condemned the police for using teargas on lawmakers and members of the House of Representatives, describing the action as “barbaric,” Leadership reports.
He then ordered the immediate suspension of plenary session in both chambers of the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that earlier on security operatives invaded the National Assembly and prevented the lawmakers from entering, and in the process used teargas on them including Staff and newsmen.
The senate president was said to have rushed to the House of Representatives’ Chamber apparently to address the situation upon hearing the development, but was also thoroughly tear gassed along with his colleagues.
Mark, however, after meeting with the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal and his deputy Emeka Ihedioha, as well as other principal officers of the National Assembly revealed that they agreed to suspend plenary.
“After due consultation with my colleagues in the both chambers of National Assembly on this ugly development, we have, therefore, agreed that today’s session be suspended forthwith,” Mark said.
The senate president insisted that it was wrong to use maximum force on parliamentarians and civil servants who were in their respective offices to do their legal duties.
It would be recalled that the House of Representatives members were told to hold plenary session on November 19, 2014, to discuss the controversial issue of emergency rule extension in Nigeria’s three troubled states of Adamawa, Yobe and Borno.
However, the presidency has already taken its decision to move against the House of Assembly should the lawmakers fail to approve the extension of state of emergency in the country’s north-east due to rising insurgency.
