Former MTV reality star Chris Carney dies at 35

Chris Carney, a former MTV reality star, the husband of Disney actress Tiffany Thornton and the son of the mayor of Hot Springs, died in a car crash on Friday morning in Arkansas. He was 35.

The single-vehicle crash occurred in Hot Springs, Ark., just before 2 a.m., local news station KTHV reports, on a Highway 70, which has seen 12 deaths since November 2014.

Both Carney and the driver, 37-year-old Ezekiel Blanton, were pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle reportedly failed to navigate a curve, leading to a collision with a tree.

Carney appeared in the 2006 MTV reality show “twentyfourseven.” Carney, the lead singer in the band The Prom Kings, was featured in the MTV show alongside his younger brother when they moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment.

Thornton toplined “Sonny With a Chance” and is currently a radio personality in Hot Springs’ KLAZ 105.9. The station released a statement on Facebook:

“Our hearts are breaking at KLAZ and Noalmark Broadcasting. Our Tiffany Thornton’s husband died in an auto crash last night. Please send up your prayers for Tiffany and her family. She is loved by us and our many listeners.”

The Hot Springs city board staff also released a statement.

“The City of Hot Springs Board of Directors, staff and employees extend their heartfelt sympathy to Mayor Ruth Carney, Rev. Ken Carney, Tiffany Thornton Carney, and the entire family upon the death of Chris Carney in a car accident which occurred early this morning. Please keep the Carney family in your thoughts and prayers at this time.”

MTV and Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Carney is survived by Thornton, who he wed in 2011, and their two children.
