Sources close to the case told Newsday that
Jelani Maraj, 37, was arraigned Thursday in Nassau County, New York
court on charges of first-degree rape and first-degree course of sexual
conduct against a child. Both charges carry a sentence of nine to 25
years in prison.
Details
about the alleged rape, such as the victim’s gender, or when and where
the sexual assault happened, were not immediately revealed.
Maraj
is the older brother of musician Nicki Minaj and was recently married
to his longtime girlfriend Jacqueline Robinson in a $30,000 ceremony
paid for by his famous younger sister.
Minaj
wore a red gown to the event in August, held at the Coral house in
Baldwin, New York, and posted several pictures of her with the groom to
her Instagram account.
‘I love my brother so much man. Can’t believe I cried during his wedding and his first dance like a punk. May God bless him and his union,’ Minaj captioned one of the photos.‘Tonight has been one of my favorite nights of all time. I do anything to see my brothers smile.’
Maraj is currently free from Nassau County jail after posting $100,000 bail.
Daily Mail Online’s calls to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office were not immediately returned Friday morning.
In
October, Minaj took home the awards for rap/hip-hop artist of the year
and favorite rap/hip-hop album at the American Music Awards.
She
was born in Trinidad, but grew up in New York City where she attended
LaGuardia High School – the prestigious public performing arts academy
