At least 10,000 people have been killed and over two million Nigerians internally displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency since 2009, President Muhammadu Buhari has said.
A recent report rated Boko Haram as the most deadly terrorist organization in the world ahead of ISIS.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who made this known on Friday night at a banquet hosted by Queen Elizabeth II for Heads of State and Government participating in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta, disclosed that majority of the internally displaced persons were women and children.
A statement issued by presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina on Saturday, quoted Buhari as calling for the establishment of a Commonwealth Committee to oversee the rendering of greater assistance and support to Nigeria and other member-countries that had been adversely affected by terrorism.
The president expressed optimism that the committee would have been established before the next CHOGM.
According to the statement, President Buhari also expects the committee to visit Commonwealth member-countries where terrorism is rife with a view to coming up with practical strategies for more meaningful assistance to the affected countries.
