The comptroller general of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hameed Ali has given details of how N1.2 billion was generated by the service between October and November 2015.
Speaking at a strategy session convened by the service to review revenue performance of the customs service for the year, Ali said the amount was generated from rice imports through land borders.
Ali said the total quantity of rice imported through land is at 17.596 metric tons which generated N1,178,720,376.
Upon assumption of duty in September, 2015, Ali approved the removal of all restrictions placed on land importation of rice.
This the customs service said was based on the large amount of rice smuggling through land borders which leads to a huge revenue loss and distortions in the price of the item in the local markets.
“The huge collection in just two months has vindicated our position. If we had stuck to our previous directive, this much quantum of rice would still have been smuggled anyway, and we would have lost over a billion Naira revenue as this critical period of our economic down-town,” Ali said.
The customs boss said that a breakdown of rice imports obtained showed that Idiroko border in Ogun state command has the largest volume of 8.276 metric tons with a collection of N555,152,344 duty while Katsina border has 3,636 metric tons imported rice with a total revenue of N242,985,626 during the same period.
Ali added that 2.156 metric tons of rice was also imported through the land borders of Oyo and Osun command generating a revenue of N144,278,025.
Other commands include: Seme, Sokoto, Kano and Jigawa and Adamawa and Taraba generating N143,349,658; N40,162,759; N31,536,148; N16,545,422; N4,710,394 at 2,140 metric tons, 602 metric tons, 248 metric tons and 68 metric tons respectively.
