Nicki Minaj took the stand during a Philadelphia court hearing on Thursday, Dec. 10, to testify on behalf of her boyfriend, Meek Mill, in his probation hearing.
Mill, 28, was convicted of gun possession and drug dealing in 2008. He was sentenced to five years of probation in 2009 after he served eight months in jail. In 2014, he violated his probation when traveling for work and spent nearly six additional months in jail.
Minaj, 33, told the judge that she plans to help her beau follow parole guidelines, adding that she might have a better influence over him than his parole officer.
“She’s not going to be the one sleeping alone if he goes to jail. I am,” Minaj testified, according to the Associated Press. “He’s not perfect, but I can’t believe how much he’s changed.”
The judge added that Mill submitted a suspicious urine sample that turned out to be nothing more than cold water. TMZ reported that Mill blamed the watery specimen on a protein shake that he drank shortly before taking the drug test. The “Anaconda” rapper insisted that her boyfriend doesn’t do drugs and did not fake his test.
“He doesn’t have a lot of structure,” Minaj continued. “He can be irresponsible. Since I’ve come in his life, I think I’ve been working on that a little bit . . . He’s just getting accustomed to being an adult.”
Mill took to Instagram on Dec. 10 to share his thoughts, writing, “I’m actually fighting for my life and freedom . . . It’s funny to see people on the Internet laughing and joking about me and my family going [through] these things . . . Thank you to everybody that ever supported and I will continue to [be] great! If this is my last post, know I will continue to remain strong and grow to [be] a better man.”
The rapper is expected to testify when his hearing resumes Thursday, Dec. 17.
Minaj recently sparked engagement rumors when she posted two Instagram photos of a huge diamond ring on Wednesday, Dec. 9, but she confirmed in herBillboard cover story that they are not engaged.
