SEE: Crazy Things These People Did To Themselves! (WARNING: Graphic Photos)

Scarring the skin in the name of art
WARNING!  These body modifications are gruesome!

Move over swallows, motivational quotes and giant roses on your behind – the latest tattoo trend is ‘scarification’.

The painful process involves removing a layer of skin and flesh with a scalpel in the shape of your desired design – and then filling the design in with ink.

When the area heals over, the scar becomes an elaborate tattoo.

Body modification expert Yann Brenyak is pioneering this gruesome new trend, which he calls a “graphic skin portrait.”

Yann posts pictures on social media of his intricate designs, including portraits, skulls and asymmetrical patterns.
The Swiss-born London-based artist has over 15,000 followers on Instagram, all fans of his stomach-churning work but he insists that what he does is no worse than having a nose job or a face lift.
“This is not any more extreme than someone getting plastic surgery, and it’s less painful,” Yann said.

“People go through much more pain by going to the gym every day trying to be a mass of muscle, and to many, covering your body with ink or scars can be more helpful or beneficial when it comes to making people feel good in the skin they were born in.”
People can pay thousands of dollars to get scarified
As well as scarification, Yann also specialises in tongue splitting and earlobe reconstruction for people who have previously had ear tunnels.
Yann isn’t the only tattooist who is embracing this shocking new trend. Samppa Von Cyborg has been hacking off chunks of people’s skin in the name of body art since 2013.
According to , the Finnish artist was trained by a professional surgeon to create these unique, unnerving designs and has fans the world over.
All in the name of art
When you’re letting someone remove slices of flesh off your face with a scalpel, it’s nice to know they’ve been adequately trained.
