Former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, has denied plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC, although he admits his mother, Madam Eunice Kalu, has since joined the party.
Kalu, a former presidential candidate of the Progressive Peoples’ Alliance, PPA, who spoke at the weekend to airport correspondents at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, upon his return from the United Kingdom, also said President Muhammadu Buhari is a family friend, but that would not be the basis for his joining the APC.
“There is no doubt that I am a friend of Buhari. Well, I will tell you the truth, my mother is in the APC. You know Buhari is a family friend. He is a chieftaincy holder in Igbere, our village. He was awarded a doctorate degree when I was governor in Abia State”, he said in response to a question that speculations were rife of his impending defection to the governing party ahead of 2019.
Mr. Kalu emphasized that party affiliation would not matter if the president performs creditably well in his first term, promising to galvanize support for him in 2019 if in his words, “Buhari handles the country very well”.
“I will support him but, that is not a condition to join the APC. Membership of any political party is immaterial at this time. He [Buhari] is not the type of president that listens to businessmen, who are going around the corridors of power looking for business. Any businessman going to Buhari with the hope of getting business has missed it. The president has a lot of jobs in his hands”, former Governor Kalu added.
The billionaire businessman went on to give the president a candid advice: “If I were in Buhari’s position, I will run for second term; that is the truth. There is no Nigerian president who didn’t ask for second term but it also behoves on Buhari to treat Nigerian people very well so that he can gain their endorsement for a second term bid”.
