One hundred and thirty-eight golfers are participating in the maiden edition of the Maritime Golf Championships which teed off in Lagos on Saturday.
The championships which is holding at the Ikoyi Club is organised by the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The one-day championships was teed-off by Hassan Bello, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), at the Ikoyi Golf Course.
Top-rated golfers are among the participants and they were drawn from Ikoyi Club, Ikeja Club and Navy Golf Club.
Speaking after the tee-off, Jean Anishere, President, Women International and Trading Association (WINTA), told NAN that the championships would not be a one-off.
"We intend to ensure that there is continuity. The sports are very important to fitness, and NIMASA is committed to this.
"We are looking forward to it being an annual event. Our sponsors made it possible, and we will have another one for the 2015 edition.
"We are going to ensure that we stay in touch with our sponsors. We appreciate all those who have supported us, and we look forward to new potential sponsors," she said.
The Deputy Director/Head of Public Relations for NIMASA, Isichei Osamgbi, said the tournament was organised as one of the sector’s initiative for a recreational activity and fitness.
He added that NIMASA was committed towards the development of golf and its development in the country.
"Fitness is very essential. We have understood this and we are committed to promoting wellness.
"Also, honesty is one of the hallmarks of golf, which is an ethic that should be imbibed by all, "Osamgbi said.
