The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Sokoto State has commenced the training of its staff to curb election-related violence and voter apathy during the forthcoming general polls.

The State Director of the agency, Alhaji Abubakar Danchadi, said this in Sokoto on Saturday.

Danchadi spoke at the opening of a one-day train-the-trainer workshop for its Chief Orientation and Mobilisation Officers across the state.

The director said that the training was organised with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

''The participants will go back to their areas of jurisdiction and sensitise the people on the need to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.

''They are also expected to mobilise the people of the state to come out en masse and cast their votes peacefully on the election days.

''These are civic duties of all patriotic Nigerians and all of us must discharge them diligently,'' he said.

According to the director, the agency was also sensitising the people on the need to shun violence during the ongoing campaigns and on election days.

He said that the people were being sensitised on the need to be law-abiding and live peacefully with each other, irrespective of their religious, ethnic, political and cultural affinities.

Also speaking, Alhaji Musa Muhammad, the INEC’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in the state, urged politicians not to embark on activities that could cause disharmony among the citizenry.

"We are ready to conduct free, fair and acceptable polls and we need the support of all Nigerians, "he said.
