The Lagos State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Gabriel Abafi, on Monday hailed the Police in Lagos State for its efforts at curbing crime.
Abafi gave the commendation when he visited the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Kayode Aderanti at the Ikeja headquarters of the force.
He said the corps and the police would work out strategies to monitor the forthcoming election in the state in February.
Abafi acknowledged the efforts of the police in curbing crime, adding that they were the closest security agency to the citizenry.
The commandant said that both the police and the NSCDC had the same mandate of securing life and property in the state and making it conducive for local and foreign investors.
"The Nigeria police and the civil defence have to work together in securing life and property of the citizens of the state during and after the elections.
"Aside from our usual function of curtailing and arresting of suspects vandalising the country’s pipeline, monitoring elections, ensuring free and fair process was also our duty.
"The agency will be proactive in curtailing pre- and post-election violence that may arise during and after the elections following the activities of miscreants,’’ Abafi said.
Responding, Kayode Aderanti, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, said the visit was timely because the country was at a crucial period when the forthcoming elections were approaching.
Aderanti said that the NSCDC and the police had to work in partnership to enhance good political atmosphere in the state during the elections.
The commissioner also said that the police would deploy its personnel to curtail insecurity and ensuring that people were safe during and after the elections.
"The most important duty of a security agent is to save life and property and create a conducive atmosphere and also make the people sleep with their two eyes closed.
"We are going to deploy our men during and after the election to curb the excesses of miscreants to ensure the state is safe.
"We will work together to deliver our mandates,’’ Aderonti said
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners of Police, Mr Lawal Ado and Mr J.B. Kokumo, and other senior officers of the NSCDC.
